MSVC (Microsoft) VC 6 is the best by a significant margin.

gcc 2.95 is the next-best choice if you are running Linux.  If you
are running windows, there really isn't a very good choice except for
MSVC as mentioned above.  The DJGPP port of gcc to dos/windows is not
nearly as good as gcc 2.95.  Perhaps 2.95 will be ported at some time
by the DJGPP guys, but not so far...

MSVC is at _least_ 10% faster than gcc, perhaps quite a bit more...
