Is not the strongest what?

"Freely available programs that come with source code and are Winboard
compatible?"
False. [IMO-YMMV]

"Chess playing engine ever invented?"
True. Deep Blue holds that mark (forgive me if this launches another "Deep Blue
tit-for-tat thread...) Some of the commercial programs are probably stronger at
some time controls, also. Burning question:
'Can you beat crafty on a PII 300 MHz or better machine without the aid of a
computer ally?'

Crafty has:
0. 5 piece endgame tablebase files
1. Source code.
2. Winboard[1] interface.
3. Approachable programmer "Bob".
4. Easily customizable opening books.
5. Ability to learn from past mistakes.

[1] The best interface ever conceived for chess playing utility.

Crafty is not for everybody. Computer phobics and those who do not like to read
documentation should try something else. For a programming geek like me, crafty
is a dream come true.
