Win 98 doesn't seem to be a reliable platform...  Win NT seems pretty good,
although it has some interesting networking problems (ie it doesn't like big
email messages or its local mail transport dies, etc.)  But I haven't noticed
any issues with crafty under linux or NT that are alarming.

We have NT machines that stay up for weeks with no problems.  We have linux
boxes that stay up for weeks and months with no problems.  We have some NT
boxes that are simply problems (secretaries get big email messages, suddenly
can't connect to the network, suddenly can't print, etc.)  But those are not
all that common...

I think either can work well...
