I taught (spring term here at UAB) a course in parallel programming (for undergraduates, not graduate students). The class had 22 students. _TWO_ of them had dual pentium-II machines _in their dorm rooms_. By the time the course ended, another had bought a dual celeron + motherboard (under $700 dollars total) so we ended up with three dual-cpu machines. I'd say they will be 'mainstream' before much longer. :) You would not _believe_ how many dual-cpu users there are on the linux-SMP mailing list. You wouldn't believe how many quad-processor machines there are, and they are _not_ just being used as file servers... they make great computational engines. We have at least a dozen parallel crafty clones running on ICC, not to mention a few parallel diep clones as well... And no, most of them are _not_ located in the USA. They are scattered around the world...
