I'm puzzled why you want to unzip a copy of xboard with WinZip, since xboard
runs only on Unix and WinZip runs only on Windows. If you're going to use
xboard on Unix, why not use the normal Unix tools to unpack it (gzip and tar)?

If you really want to do this, I'm under the impression that WinZip does support
the gzip and tar formats, so it should work. Perhaps you got a bad download.
Try downloading again. To be sure of correct results, use an ftp program, not a
Web browser, set the program to binary mode, and download from
ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/xboard/xboard-4.0.3.tar.gz.
