Excuse me for living ! No need to go overboard. When I was in Turkey someone told me a saying that I found offensive: "Women are like old rugs, the more you beat them the stronger they get." I think just about anyone would find it offensive (probably including many Turkish people). The person who repeated that phrase to me had no idea that it was repellant. When we receive a remark that seems offensive to us, we can: 0. Ignore it. Sometimes that is the best thing to do. 1. Explain that it is offensive and why. Sometimes that is the best thing to do. 2. Take strong action to deter the use of such terminology. Sometimes that is the right thing to do. In this case, I think we had #1. It is not like you were suggesting the "Final Solution" but rather (I assume) it is intended to be humorous [of course nobody would beat someone just because they were a stepchild...] The world is full of cultural gaps. We can educate each other and learn what hurts the feelings of others. If we value their company we will try not to offend. We can also put forth effort not to be offended at the drop of a hat. No need to leave. We are all adults here. Let's forgive and forget, maybe.
