Genius6.1 - Fritz 5.32 2,0-2,0 1st game The tournament starts with a surprise, a clear win by Genius ; after a long book line Fritz' first calculated move is the forcing 16. ...b4 which backfires a little. The decisive point is probably already move 24 where Genius plays the clever Qd5; after 24. ...Qd5x the game should be decided as black can't do anything against the mighty connected passers on c and d ; both progs have difficulties to see that at that time but the game is very convincing. 25. ...Rfd8 seems to make it even worse by the way ; Fritz doesn't understand about the danger here it seems. 2nd game Very strange one ; Genius wins a pawn and both progs agree white has no compensation ; by some miracle Fritz manages to equalize though and even win ( fascinating finish :=). Genius is black here in a King's Indian which it treats quite well advancing the kingside pawns ; while Fritz's opening moves like 14. Re1 , 16. Qf3 , 19. Qg4 , 22. Qh3 look a little awkward. Very difficult to find the critical moment where Genius spoils the game. 3rd game Fritz gets opening advantage and promising queenside majority ; 31. ... ba seems to be the move that gives most of the advantage away , then Genius escapes to draw ( 31. ... b4 !?). 4th game If Fritz was lucky in the 2nd game , Genius is lucky here . Fritz gets clear advantage and trades down to an endgame both progs think is a clear win while it is a well-known theoretical draw ; it was a surprise that both progs didn't know this one !! The result seems to be fair when watching the games ; Genius as one of the two progs I wasn't sure to choose proved it still can bite sometimes :=) . Fritz' start in the tourn was a little disappointment for me . Crafty16.17 - CSTal2.03 1,5-2,5 1st game CSTal wins ; simply great game; no comments from me here. 2nd game Crafty wins ; a game which very clearly shows the major weak point of Tal ; the game is in fact decided after 18...Bc5 where Tal refuses to simply take the pawn back for a messy pawn's sac , also 23. ... Kh8 when it realizes it can't make further progress is quite typical ; rest is silence. 3rd game 1/2 4th game Another brilliant Tal game . Both nice wins were strongly influenced by opening book ; Tal has about 500MB opening book; sometimes this is a disadvantage , here it worked great . Tal was the other entry I wasn't sure to let in ; both Genius and CSTal proved they are more than junkfood for the others. Nimzo2000-Shredder3.0 3,0-1,0 Nimzo2000 outplayed Shredder in this match ; hard for me to comment as I wasn't fully concentrated while they were played. Interesting fact is both wins from Nimzo were achieved on the slower hardware . Both Nimzo wins were quite pretty . This clear result was very surprising for me : seems Nimzo has entered the league of favourites . We'll see. Hiarcs7.32 - Junior5.0 1,0-3,0 As expected Hiarcs has the usual problems with Junior , although 1-3 is worse than what I expected. From spectator's view these games seemed to be of the highest quality, but maybe I am only too lazy to make more comments :=). I look forward to the next round . Most interesting Match might be Shredder-Hiarcs7.32 where the loser could already be out of the battle for the tournament win.
