At the risk of being sacraligous, I find a database even more useful that a
chess engine. I downloaded Crafty and it's all I need.
The problem with a database is the cost. Chessbase 7 with the "Mega" database
and thousands of annotated games is over $400.
What are the alternatives, or are there any?
I want to be able to search for pawn structures, endgames etc. Annotated games
are a must as are, of course, openings.
