Crafty is also great for people like me who know even less probably about
programming than you do, it's very well commented (I have not looked through it
for a while though) and just about anything that you can think of, there's
examples of it in Crafty

I'd consider Crafty a great open book full of C code, it's hard to beat, and it
plays a hell of a game of Chess too (v16.18 just smokes)
