  Yes, Crafty is very well commented, but it's still too complicated to start
with it. If my opinion insterest anyone, I'd recommend starting implementing the
code from very general (and sometimes stupid, at least mine :)) and writing a
super-simple chess program. That's the way you start understanding what's
happening all along the search tree.
  Next task is improve it, always from abstract ideas.
  When you have enough experience, then you're ready to study other people
programs.
  If you don't start from the begining, it's true that you can write a strong
program from other people sources, but you will not be able to improve it much,
cause you won't understand the way the program works.
  Just my opinion.
