Nicolas,

No such magical number exists I'm afraid. In their favorite openings, a GM may
play 20 moves of "book", in other lines, they may jump out from "book" in less
than 10. A lot of it depends upon the other player's moves.

I'm not aware of a really good way to build an opening book from a file like
yours. Normally, a book such as Encyclopedia of Chess Openings is used. You must
then select from experience, insight, and 3 wandering psychics ;-) which
openings you want your program to play both as white and as black.

Openings which lead to a more closed or positional game, are generally not
favorable to chess programs. Any opening where equality or better is re-gained
several moves later is also to be viewed with suspicion, since your program will
be out of book by then, (probably), with no way to "see it through" except
through sheer search, blind luck, and the aforementioned wandering psychics.

Good luck, Nicolas!

Dave
