That's an excellent point. In the extreme case, one could have "tested" program by playing against a total novice. Then it's obvious that the game doesn't "test" much at all and it's of no use to the programmer. For programmer the most useful would be a play against somewhat stronger human. Unfortunately, lowering the speed of your hardware to get the most info out of a given pool of players goes against human nature. No one likes losing, even if it may be good for you.
