For instance, if I take some endgame EPD positions and have crafty pound them with no tablebase files at all, I will get a high NPS figure of about 200K. If I add tablebase files, it may go "down" to 180K. But if you look at the depth in plies searched, it will average a deeper search than before. So the NPS goes down but the *REAL* search speed goes up. So much for NPS.
