Hi CCC addicts! In the last days we have heard several complains about the fact that only programs from a given company had been tested on superior hardware by the SSDF. Representatives from the SSDF, including the chairman, have explained how they picked the programs tested on this superior hardware: they took the four highest rated programs that were able to play games automatically (by mean of the Auto232 system), because they had only four K6-450 computers and a limited time to complete the tests. I think that's a perfectly reasonable explanation. Now comes the question: which programs is the SSDF going to test on K6-450 for the November list??? This decision is totally theirs, of course. However, I would suggest that they test, at least, the following programs: * ChessMaster 6000 * Shredder Paderborn * Chess Tiger 12.0 Here is why: * Obviously, CM6000 being on top of the P200MMX sublist, it is a serious candidate for the top of the list on K6-450. The problem is of course that the next list is due in only two months, and that automatic testing is not possible with CM6000. Personally I wish they could find the time to test it on K6-450, and that Mindscape, who sells this program, could add the automatic testing feature in CM6000. Or in CM7000 which is anyway going to have exactly the same engine. * Shredder Paderborn should be tested, if possible, simply because it is the reigning World Champion. I hope Stefan can provide a version to the SSDF. * On the other hand, as the chairman Thoralf Karlsson himself said in his comment: "After 178 games Chess Tiger 11.8 P90 has a rating of 2483, which is the highest rating so far on that hardware! But we must remember that several of the best programs haven't been tested on P90. On a P200 MMX I guess that Chess Tiger 11.8 would get a rating within 10-20 points from the top. Of course we look forward to play with the latest version of Chess Tiger on faster hardware." If Tiger 11.8 would be at 10-20 points from the top, and as it is able to play automatic games, then obviously, as Thoralf points out, it is a good candidate for K6-450 testing... However, Tiger 11.8 is the April 99 version of Chess Tiger, and the book that has been provided to the SSDF is -as we unfortunately noticed later- full of incorrect lines. If the SSDF is willing to test Tiger on faster hardware (K6-450), I wish they let me first provide them a much better version, which is Tiger 12.0, the one that will be soon released as the REBEL-TIGER. The engine itself has been tremendously improved over 11.8, and the book is now free from mistakes. I can provide the SSDF quickly with this engine, by Internet, and allow them to make copies of the program for their testing purposes if it can help. I hope the SSDF representatives will give a positive answer to my proposition. Christophe Théron Author of Chess Tiger
