Subject: Fighting Endgame Moves

Here a two examples of nice fighting moves made by computer programs in
the endgame. Two moves that necessarily should not have won but seemed
to pose the greatest problems for their opponents.

Position #1 is from Rebel Century versus against Hiarcs7(standard 40/2
game)This game and others can be downloaded on the Rebel Homepage.

8/B7/5p1p/3kn1p1/6P1/P1K2p1P/1P3P2/8 b - - id Hiarcs 7.0 - Rebel Century; bm
f6f5;
Rebel of course is lost but fights on with f5!
Hiarcs fails to find the best moves(49.Bb8 instead of Bd4 as one example) and
actually loses. Here are the remaining moves:48. gxf5 h5 49.
Bd4 h4 50. Bxe5 Kxe5 51. Kd3 g4 52. Ke3 gxh3 53. Kxf3 Kxf5 54. a4 Ke6 55.
a5 Kd6 56. a6 Kc7 57. b4 Kc6 58. Kg4 h2 59. Kxh4 h1=Q+ 60. Kg3 Kd5 61.
a7 Qa1 62. b5 Qxa7 63. Kf3 Qb6 64. Ke2 Qxb5+ 65. Kf3 Qd3+ 66. Kf4 Qe4+
67. Kg3 Qe2 68. f4 Ke4 69. f5 Qf3+ 70. Kh2 Qf2+ 71. Kh3 Kf4 72. f6 Qg3#
0-1 Note the sad position of white's king on f3 which unfortunately must
eventually move allowing the promotion of the h pawn.

Now another one, this time Hiarc's 7.32 comes up with an excellent move choice.
This game was recently posted by Hans as part of the Hiarcs 7.32 vs Junior 5
SSDF match.

1n6/6p1/5p1p/p1kB1P1P/Pp1pKPP1/1P6/8/8 b - - id Junior 5 P200MMX 45 - Hiarcs
7.32 P200MMX; bm d3;

Here I thought the pawn push to d3 was a powerfull fighting move. The move
should not win but is a great choice in this position. A few moves later the
following occured:

8/4n1p1/5p1p/p1k2P1P/Pp3PP1/1P2K3/3p4/3B4 w - - id Junior 5 P200MMX 45 - Hiarcs
7.32 P200MMX; am Kxd2;

Here Junior played Kxd2 and lost. It looks like Bf3 instead would survive.
