What do you mean by your 'average'?

Also, getting into MIT (or any good school) depends on a great deal more than
your grades and SAT scores. I'll share a story:

One of my friends and I both applied for MIT a couple years ago. He was the
valedictorian of our class (4.3 GPA or so) and had (I think) 1460 SAT.
Unfortunately, he had a couple discipline problems in his past, and had even
been suspended for a while from school. This certainly affected his chances of
getting in (which he didn't), but it also certainly wasn't the _only_ thing that
prevented him from getting in.
I had a 1500 SAT and a GPA of about 3.85, and I also didn't get into MIT.  I'm
sure my essay had some part in this, as it was a cynical view on the state of
public education. :)

The point, again, is that it is not grades and tests alone that will get you
accepted (or not accepted) to a (very) good school.
