I think anyhow I was being blinded by my program's reliance on material value (as opposed to "shortest mate") considerations. My request was based on 1. Bd4 Bb7 2. Bxb6 cb 3. Qxb6 Qd8 4. Qa7+ Kc8 5. Rb1 Rc7 6. Rc4 Rxg6 7. Rxb7 Kd7 8. Rcxc7+ Ke8 9. Rb8 Rxg3+ 10. hg ... which my program found and I just extended it: 10. ... g5 11. Rxd8+ Kxd8 12. Qb8++. But it seems 5. ... Qc7 is a mate in 9, thus - if the initial approach is correct - we have a mate in 14, at best.
