Your setup seems much more interesting to pursue the testing
than Ed's, since the problem on your's seems to be easily
reproducable. Now you could vary the system & program setting
to find out why it slows down. For example, it may have to do
with video memory scanning if Rebel (or DOS program) runs in
particular form of access to extended memory mode e.g. is your
Rebel using int 15h type of access, VCPI, EMS, XMS? Your config.sys
and autoexec.bat would be probably of interest to whoever wishes
to get to the bottom of it. By varying these you may find exactly
the component which combines with auto232 to cause such slowdown
and Ed should be able to reproduce it and work around it. With some
debugging tool (e.g. Soft-ICE) one could probably pinpoint it exactly
and directly (unless the driver is rigged to purposefully slow down
DOS programs thus giving advantage to windows programs).

Also, an easily demonstrable settings where auto232 skews significantly
the game (in favour of Windows programs) ought to catch attention of
SSDF (on their list the Windows programs have jumped ahead, even though
the same basic algorithm, be it in 16 or 32 bit code, would run about 5%
faster at the same hash table size without Windows; Windows is basically
one wasteful CPU hog).
