Early in the cool morning hours here in Albuquerque, New Mexico USA we had the
lift off of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. Balloons from all
over the world, in many different shapes and colors flew grandly in the still
air. Truly, the sight of a lifetime.
Later in the day we were treated to the game between Ed Schroeders' Rebel
Century and GM Scherbakov. Definitely--a great moment in computer chess. It
will get better. I will replay that game a few more dozen times as I sip dark
rich coffee and listen to sweet music.
At 7:00 PM PST as I stood on my sky deck with my wife Virginia and our two dogs,
Bonnie and Mittens{the Pit-Bull} a cone of eerie orange light rose up due west
from Vandenberg Air Force Base over a thousand miles away in California. It
ended with a ball of ionized gases that rapidly expanded beyond the
stratosphere. We did not see the interception of that Minuteman missile by a
120 pound 55 inch long Anti-Ballistic Missile because that happened 4300 miles
beyond Vandenberg in the Pacific Ocean twenty minutes later.
Such is life. A rich panoply of events that are going in all directions.
