It's calle FICS. It is very simple to run a FICS server on a machine, run a chess program on the same machine and connect another chess program on a separate machine. Some time ago, I tried to compile and run the FICS code and I had the impression that it requires very little CPU time if only a couple of users are connected. The only issue is that FICS runs on unix only, while most of the computer chess people might prefer Windows. Porting FICS to windows might be not really trivial. It could be easier to write a FICS compliant tiny chess server to allow two FICS clients to play each other (e.g. two programs using Winboard) Paolo
