I like the idea. Perhaps the Winboard protocol could be used as a basis (under the transport) since it is already spelled out in detail. Why not use ACE to abstract the whole thing, and then it will run on anything under the sun from Linux to MVS to NT? http://www.cs.wustl.edu/~schmidt/ACE.html
