the n is obviously stronger in tactics or in a closed position but a n + r agst a b+r with pawns is better for the b+r as 2 b are much stronger than 2 n,i would agree with philidor as he was refering to pawn structures not the pawn,if you remove all the piecies in a game that looks even the remaining pawn structure should decide the winner.
