I ignore it totally as in general, my internet connection is very fast (OC12). But on occasion, due to technical problems between me and the ICC server somewhere, I see long lags. Yes, it distorts the game. I have seen GM games with crafty played at 3 0 time control last over 1/2 hour because of lag between the GM and ICC. It really isn't 3 0 then, because Crafty is pretty accurate at predicting and it gets a serious time bonus when this happens. But there is not much you can do about it... and if you lose a game, yes it is useful because every loss ought to 'tell you a story' about what needs work.
