Subject: playing on slow hardware

Hi,

I have a old DEC that I ported my engine to (kinda just to see if it would port
nicely). Anyway, when it plays there it gets only about 1500 nps...

On fast hardware I am able to draw (and sometimes beat) gnuchess. When I lose
it is at least hard fought. On the DEC, though, where searches rarely get past
4 ply, gnuchess _kills_ me.

I suppose this is because of superior move ordering in gnuchess (such that the
first move it considers is more likely to be a good move?). But I am
considering moves in what I think is a good order... Does anyone have an
alternate explaination?

I ask because it occurs to me that if I can improve the code so that it is
competitive with gnuchess on the slow machine, it will improve on faster
machines too...

Thanks again,
Scott
