Hi Wayne,
I was just thinking the same thing this morning, so I made a trip to the local
computer store to do a little benchmarking. Note that I didn't use a well-known
program like Crafty - my goal was to see how my program (Grok) would do.
I didn't want to hang out there for a long time, so I just ran a couple of
fixed-depth searches on two different machines. (The K6-3/450 is my home
machine). The times (in seconds) are listed below:
K6-3/450 P3/600 Athlon/600
position #1 72.3 62.6 46.9
position #2 64.0 51.1 40.3
As you can see, the Athlon easily beat the P3 running at the same clock speed!
