Just a few more data points.... I tried a number of win/dos chess programs with
Wine. Rebel 10 did not work, some versions of Fritz partially worked, but
eventually crashed. Chess Assistant and Chessbase 7.0 did not work. However, the
following programs worked reasonably well:

Genius 4 (seemed solid)
CBLight was ok as long as you did not start an engine :-)
Shredder 3 seemed to start, and would probably run, but the copy protection
fouled things up.
Gromit 1.2 seemed to work fairly well
Bookup 1.5.3 ran ok, with the exception of Zarkov.
