My feeling is that Windows will survive, although there is no rational
explanation for this. Some people would rather pay $200 for a beta version than
get a stable os for free (if it's free, it can't be good).
My advice: Write as much code as possible in a platform-independent way (that
will save you a big headache), and add a Windows GUI. At some point, you can
think about a Linux GUI, or if your program just plays and doesn't have any
additional features like databases or such, use xboard/WinBoard.
