Well, in my opinion, James is 80% right.
Many many many years ago the SSDF people played against computers to establish
the initial ratings.  Since then computer vs computer games have been based on
those ratings, (with one that I know of devaluation of about 100 ponts in about
1990).

I would say "the SSDF ratings have a statistically tenuous link to FIDE ELO
ratings."
