Actually, the point is not as good as it sounds on the surface.

How many people HERE on this forum have purchased chess playing, database, or
other software?

You perhaps?

There are a ton of shareware and freeware programs out there and people still
pay out good money for chess software. The same applies to OS' or any other
software.
