I called Slate several times in my early computer chess days. And Ken Thompson. And they called me. And we all answered each other's questions when we knew the answer. I was surprised the first time I got hold of Ken, and Dave, and many others. Hsu seems to be the same. I get three types of responses from him typically: (1) xxx, feel free to use this; (2) yyy, but don't quote me or use my name/etc; (3) no response, although this is pretty rare. I try to do the same for the 50+ emails I get every day. :)
