Subject: Fritz6 first impression

Here is my first impression of Fritz6 engine strenth based on very few
test-games and only a few hours of observation.

It gets 2 positions less of LCTII test suit right than fritz5, thats worse than
bringer, lg2000 and crafty.
It is obviously less strong tactically than Fritz5. I stopped a
10minutes(K6II-400) Nunn Engine-Engine match after 4 draws and 2 wins for Fritz5
(by no means representative). I guess the strategical evaluation is taking more
time, it searches a lot less nodes than fritz5.
It will then probably play better in standart time-control matches. Fritz6 now
even takes more time on first move out of the opening-book than fritz5, which is
a good idea IMHO.
It still tries to get dynamical positions at all costs (moving pawns about 2x as
often as crafty in one game) which it understands best.
Finally good TB-support with easy to use TB-Generator and TB on CD.

Overall I do not think that Fritz6 is more than 30elo stronger than fritz5 in
computer-computer.

Interface looks great. Few minor bugs. Nothing special. Database support got
even better. Be carefull when installing to select the right directories.

Regards,
