My first impressions of Fritz 6 correspond to yours. The one hundred odd
games(mainly blitz) I have played so far indicate that it is slightly weaker
than the 5.32 version at fast blitz games and slightly stronger at longer tc's.
At G/30 already it seems a bit stronger than the 5.32. At any rate it is quite
strong positionally -- although I have always been saying that Fritz (starting
with version 3) was positionally sound. Its incredible tactical prowess always
provoked jealous comments dealing mainly with its linear, mechanical and dumb
computing power. What actually happened was that Fritz was "purposefully"
seeking open positions at which it excelled. On the other hand it was obvious
that in all positional tests it did quite well, even better than some
"positional programs".
Here is the cross table of a short tourney played on a PII-400, 32MB hash,
pondering off (sudden death, G/30, Nalimov 4/5). (BTW, a real pity but Fritz 6
is not SMP yet. But, Junior 6 will be.)
