They are positions which are impossible to reach.  IE from the given position,
there is no possible previous position.  Such as where white is in check and
not on move, or white is in check by two different pieces, where there is no
black move (ie a discovered check) that could have produced this position.

This is caused by the indexing scheme that allows nearly all combinations of
pieces on squares, whether they could actually happen or not.  Nothing wrong,
nothing buggy, just a fluke of the "Godel indexing scheme"...
