If you have Win98, you already have some version of DirectX. If you have WinNT
4 (SP3 or higher), you already have some version of DirectX. Installing a new
version should present no problems. I never had one single DirectX problem on
any machine (up through DX 6.1, and now 7 is released(?)).

That's a bit over-dramatic. You can reinstall the OS without reformatting, and
it will pretty much fix itself. It will even keep your current settings, all
your existing programs, start menu, etc. - it will only rewrite the real OS
files (including DirectX), and therefore any DirectX problems will be fixed.

Installing QuickTime is no more dangerous than installing a word-processor.

QuickTime does not replace video drivers. DirectX does not replace video
drivers. QuickTime is simply a format for compressing video. In the case of
DirectX, it simply provides better ways for the video subsystem (card +
_existing_ drivers) to display things.
