Please note in particular that DirectX is NOT >UNINSTALLABLE. Once you've got it, you've got it forever. If you have Win98, you already have some version of DirectX. If you have WinNT 4 (SP3 or higher), you already have some version of DirectX. Installing a new version should present no problems. I never had one single DirectX problem on any machine (up through DX 6.1, and now 7 is released(?)). > If it messes up >your computer, your only alternative is to start over again from scratch, >reformat your hard drive, reinstall your operating system, etc. That's a bit over-dramatic. You can reinstall the OS without reformatting, and it will pretty much fix itself. It will even keep your current settings, all your existing programs, start menu, etc. - it will only rewrite the real OS files (including DirectX), and therefore any DirectX problems will be fixed. > Quicktime is >maybe less dangerous, but uninstalling it will probably still leave some >unwanted residues on your system. Installing QuickTime is no more dangerous than installing a word-processor. > Replacing your video drivers should always >be done only with great care. QuickTime does not replace video drivers. DirectX does not replace video drivers. QuickTime is simply a format for compressing video. In the case of DirectX, it simply provides better ways for the video subsystem (card + _existing_ drivers) to display things. Jeremiah
