Subject: Pilot Chess Opening Practice

Does anyone know of a program that would let you practice openings on one of the
PDAs like the Pilot. I am looking for a program that would display the board -
allow you to enter moves - respond to those moves by playing something out of
its book - and when you completed the opening correctly acknowledge that you ahd
done so and what opening it was that the two of you played; or if you, somewhere
along the way, did not play the right move it would alert you to this error and
let you try another. I do not want something that makes you pick an opening by
name and practice that one - I want it to be free and more open than that. It
should function just like a chess playing program except only in the opening
book. Of course it would be best if the software also allowed you to enter
openings of your own to expand its book if needed. I have to think this would
be easier to do than to write a whole chess program, but what do I know. I do
know I have asked some of the programmers of chess programs and none of them
seemed interested or pursued it. The one chess program for the pilot I found is
great and it seems like all that he would have to do is when the code goes to
switch from looking up opening book moves to the evalution tree is to end the
code there with a module that sends a message to the screen as to success or
failure and then loop back to continue or offer you another chance at the errant
move.

I think it would be great to have something in your pocket that would let you
use those idle minutes waiting in places to learn chess openings. if enough of
us show interest, maybe even one of the big companies will come out with a small
handheld opening computer with an LCD screen.
