Don't apologize for seeking a bit of knowledge. That's smart, not stupid. You
are actually paying English speaking people a compliment by expressing an
interest in their language. Americans are much worse at learning about other
peoples languages than Europeans, so maybe we should be apologizing to you!

If you are looking for a succinct way to convey this, you can just say: "Flag"
or "White's/Black's flag fell".
