If someone says, "This is not a crafty clone." I think there is nothing wrong with that (as long as it is true). If someone uses someone else's work, it is only natural to credit the original author. Truthfully, I suspect that *most* chess programmers have learned things from crafty. Not surprisingly, I think that is what is *intended* for those who are interested. The source is public so that people can avoid reinventing the wheel, and see something that already works to demonstrate advanced ideas. On the other hand, to clone an algorithm by understanding what it does and writing some code to do it is a very different thing than to simply take someone else's work and stamp your name on it. Even in the best case, that is plagarism, and in the worst case it can be theft. I don't see that you have ever done something wrong as far as intellectual property rights go. You have always acted properly to the best of your understanding according to the information that you were given. Taking someone else's work and claiming it as your own will never advance anything. If anything, it can have the opposite effect, because it will make experts cautious about teaching how something works. If we could truly depend on 100% honesty, everything would be 100% open source. Unfortunately, there are many persons who do not want to operate in an honest manner. This small minority causes great problems and that is too bad. [snip]
