Therefore winboard/xboard cannot be simply ported to the MacOS. MacOS uses AppleEvents, and a chess AppleEvent suite has been developed and is used by Exachess to communcate with external chess engines. Screamer supports the 2.0 protocol and works well with Exachess. At present, there is not an ICS/FICS chess interface for MacOS that you can write a chess engine for. Will Singleton wrote his own interface, adopted from freely available source code. I have yet to do this (on the list of things to do) and therefore Screamer suffers from a lack of server play. Ideally, someone (read --not me at this time--) should write an AppleEvent driven interface. Then, like xboard, any engine could get on the servers without each author re-developing the wheel so to speek. William wbryant@ix.netcom.com
