I have Rebel Century and am very happy with it. The Windows version is taking longer than expected, (March 2000?) so this release is mainly to release the improved engine - improvements including the learning experience against Anand & GM's etc. Rebel Century has no Upgrade price, cost me $60Aus (=40US 30UK) direct from Ed, and Century gives an Upgrade discount for the upcoming Windows version. This version also has the Engine Personality adjustable parameters (A bit like CM6k only more parameters & more significant parameters). The look & feel is similar to Rebel10, the playing (at default) is like Rebel 10b, with good bits of 10c thrown in, & a bit of extra strength. The personalities allow change to search style, selectivity, "knowledge", On my (Dads) PIII400 I've toggled the parameters to force Rebel to: search a position at 30k/sec, or same posn at 160k/sec; reach 10 ply in 2mins, or same posn 14 ply in 2 mins; The Rebel Site is slow for me too, I just toggle back & foreward to/from it while I do my other internet stuff. The Rebel Site has kept the customer completely up to date with RCentury, there's dozens of pages, screen shots & explanations. I knew heaps about it before it arrived. Ed has given very quick feedback on the bulletin board as well. > >So the information for this product that I was able to obtain has been very >little. Ed has advised for two years now that Rebel is easiest played in Windows. He even provides specialist Icons. There never has been a need for boot disks for Rebel, the Dos method was to hit F8 on the way in to bypass caches & drivers & stuff. Ed says you lose 2 or 3% speed by playing in windows & that is too little to worry me. I have an Icon (right beside my "non-windows" Hiarcs732), a click & I'm in Rebel with 60meg hash. > >Next time I will pay more attention to these things and not just assume. It might take you two hours (but that's why we've got AltTab) but the Rebel Century pages are a customers delight. 100 times more web info than any other chess playing software. > >I must say that after my big let down with CM7K I was looking forward to finally >getting a windows version of my second favorite program. > >Looks like this Christmas and this whole year has been a let down for me. > >I think I might see if I can get Fritz 6 for Christmas. But I am still unpset that Rebel Century is not what I first thought. Have a read about the apparent drop in strength of Fritz 6, threads here and RGCC, compared to Fritz 532 before you spend money there too. > >Looking at other posts I am not the only one who thought it was a windows chess >program. So why all this confusion ? I wonder at the confusion too, because threads on this CCC forum have clearly shown that the Windows version was delayed. This was after all the animosity about the Windows interface cleared up, Ed announced here what was happening, and there was plenty of discussion. There can be no doubt that Ed has done enough in promoting what Rebel Century was to be. Like you, some people have "not paid much attention to it". I was awaiting the upgrade so I therefore noticed all theposts about it. I'm very happy with this latest Rebel Upgrade, and I too eagerly await the Windows version - only so I can squeeze even more information on my screen after going to 1024x800. Tina Long
