Here is a posting from Rebel-Board on this topic. Although it might be not
the real reason on your system (because I am often lost too) it might be an
explanation. Also note the "joy-stick" problem. Unbelievable but true.

A few years ago (or was it one year?) there were some motherboards
who did not cache the second 64 Mb which resulted in a huge performance
loss. If memory serves me well the problem was with PC's with 128 Mb and
up. The problem disappeared as quickly as it came as the hardware bug was
fixed and also you could bypass the problem using the right HIMEM.SYS
from MicroSoft.

There is another speed-killer. If you use software of "Creative" (sound
blaster) then turn off the "joy-stick" driver by all means. On one of our
PC's it was responsible for a slow-down of 30%. My guess is that the
driver polls for input too many times a second.
