Kevin,

It sounds like you have a memory leak in one of your applications. If all you do
the whole time you are online is play chess, then I would suspect the program
you are using. But one thing puzzles me - you say your computer "goes slow". The
memory leak would account for the resource usage, but not necessarily for the
slow down, unless resources get really low.

Which chess program are you using?
