Sometimes in a tournament it makes sense not to try to win, but to play remis. Also in computer-tournaments such situations are thinkable. E.g. last game in computer-championship 1999, when Shredder only needed a half point against Ferret to become master of all classes. (So far as I know, SM Kahlen did not change program parameters, in order to increase remis-probalitiy) In human play I think it is possible, to play with remis-intention. How are the experiences with programs not only to make the best move, but to make moves with best chances for remis. I think one will need a special remis-opening book, perhaps a special kind of play (sometimes favour to exchange pieces?), perhaps it is useful to chance "contempt value", and so on. Have people tried to tune an engine with remis-intention. What was the success? Is it an illusion? Peter Schneider
