I have tried using genetic algorithms (GA) to tune the weights of my evaluation
function, but I set that aside because the underlying program was so slow. I
hope to soon give the GA stuff another shot. I have heard of others using the
same technique and finding that GA could, for example, find approximately the
correct weights of the various pieces. However, the process converged so slowly
that I think those more interested in chess have returned to hand tuning.
