Crafty is anything but a slow program. Crafty is mostly in C.

I would suggest that you take some time to download the latest Crafty at
ftp://ftp.cis.uab.edu/pub/hyatt/ and also Winboard for an interface, you can
find that at http://www.research.digital.com/SRC/personal/Tim_Mann/chess.html
and play Crafty in Winboard and not a Chessbase interface because Crafty is
hobbled by being used through Hiarcs.

Pay attention to the FAQ, Doc, & txt files available at the Crafty site,
download those first, and if you need help setting it up also see Frank's
Winboard site at http://www.ginko.de/user/volker.pittlik/schach/winboard.htm or
any of the other sites that help with the proceedure.
