Past experience has taught me to not to welcome big zip files of daily posts.

Over the last two years I have been teaching myself to program and how to write
a chess engine to work under WinBoard/XBoard. On the spectrum extending from
straight copying to implementing news ideas, my technique is very close to
copying and I will be eternally grateful to Tom Kerrigan and Bob for making
their source code available, and Bob and others for answering (what must be to
them) stupid, simple questions. It is to Bob’s credit and many ordinary
members advantage that he gives so much of his time and effort for free. I
certainly appreciate it.

Whatever the merits of freeware, the recent histrionics have certainly been an
eye-opener into the ethos and marketing strategy of some of the producers of
chess software for sale. Caveat emptor.

Frank
