Why limit the program to one chip?  If written in C, the program could be ported
to any chip/operating system that has a C compiler, which is pretty much
everything.  Not only would the Intel chip based machines be target platforms,
but also Motorola based machines or Alpha based machines, etc.  And, the
operating system wouldn't even be in the picture.
