Subject: Dutch Championship Test Positions

Author: Howard Exner

Here are some positions to try out on your programs from the first
half of the recent Dutch Computer Chess Championships.

8/6p1/7p/1pn1k3/p5P1/2P2P2/1PK3N1/8 b - - bm Ne6; id Chessica - McTobber99;

The old guideline that Knight/pawn endings have similar themes to pawn endings
applies here.
 g5 was played which ruins a possible g6, h5 outside passer idea. Instead, Ne6
follwed up by Nf4
and the h pawn passer idea would probably have won.

rnb1kb1r/pp1ppp1p/1q4p1/2pPP2n/8/2N2N2/PPQB1PPP/R3KB1R w KQkq - bm d5d6; id
Insomniac - Morphy3.1;

d6! ended the game quickly. I wonder if this was in book or just a nicely
searched out move by Insomniac?

8/8/8/R3N3/4r1pk/2K5/8/7b w - - bm e5g4; id McTobber99 - Diep;

Here white missed the draw with Nxg4.

8/p7/8/1b5B/3k4/4p3/P7/4K3 w - - bm h5e2; id Nimzo 732 - The King;

White makes a nice move setting up a quick draw if black replies Bxe2, which is
what happened.
Black should make white fight harder for a draw by keeping the Bishops on.

5r2/R6P/3Nb1p1/2p2k2/2P2Pp1/2K5/8/8 b - - bm f5f4; id Nimzo 732 - Insomniac;

Looks like Kxf4 is a good fighting move, which black missed and eventually lost.

1... Kxf4 2. Nf7 g3 3. h8=Q Rxh8 4. Nxh8 Bf5 5. Rg7 Kg5 6. Re7 g2 7. Re1
Kf4 now has white having to search for a draw.

1... Kxf4 2. Re7 Rh8 3. Rxe6 Rxh7 is better but still offers black a possible
draw.
