Of the micro programmers, Spracklens early on (Challengers), then Dave Kittinger
(Constelation/s, Forte) and finally Marty Hirsch (AI Chess, MChess) all advanced
the microcomputer chess field toward a strong humanlike play, by a large step in
the 1980s and early 1990s. The Constelations and the first AIChess/MChess were
especially refreshing when they burst onto the scene (Lang's programs, although
strong for their time, had a dull style for my taste). In the recent years,
first Rebel 8 and up (by Ed Schoreder) then Hiarcs 6 and up (by Mark Uniacke)
were the most refreshing humanlike new programs (I haven't tried CS-Tal yet, so
maybe this is not a fair picture).
