My advice is don't get too hung up on trying to find 'the best' board
representation - such a thing probably doesn't exist.  Just choose one that
makes sense to you, and run with it.  As you gain experience using a particular
data structure, you will find many ways to optimise your entire program (not
just the move generation) around it.
