There is some truth to this but I would like to point out that it is not uniformly true, and that sometimes people come who you'd think would not come. For instance, Fritz has been at every event that I've been at, and he came to them while he was world champion, even when you'd expect that he should have simply hid for four years. In essence, he defended his title three times when he didn't have to, when anything other than first place would have dimished his reputation in one sense. Of course, by attending he increased it in some other ways, especially by attending in person each of these times. Shredder was also at every micro event since 1996, defended his title in 1998, and said that he'd come to all of them for the foreseeable future, regardless of performance. Virtual Chess has been at all of them as well, I believe. We've also seen Tiger as long as Tiger has been something real, I think. Was Nimzo there every time? I think so. We have not seen Genius since 1995, true. We've seen The King and Rebel a couple of times. We've also seen Hiarcs and MChess, who compete but don't send operators. The list of those who never show up is approximately empty, I think, although some are rather infrequent. bruce
